Frequently, when students have problems with reading and spelling, the difficulty lies in the beginning skills, such as:
- hearing and identifying each sound in a word (phoneme awareness),
- connecting the sounds to the letters, or strings of letters, that represent them (phonics), and
- recognizing and interpreting parts of longer words with prefixes, roots, and suffixes (morphology).
I focus on helping students with to learn these skills.
In 2015, I started using the Orton-Gillingham approach. With the logical sequence and focus on the structure of the language, I became more effective at helping students make sense of English spelling. Inspired to learn more, I completed a training and practicum at the local Children’s Dyslexia Center and became a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP).
I would love to meet with you and your child to see how I can help.
